Butch Jones, who over the years faced Oklahoma three times – twice at Tennessee, once while at Cincinnati – on Bob Stoops' retirement: "He's earned the right to step away when he wants to step away. What he's built at the University of Oklahoma and what he's been able to accomplish throughout the course of his career, he's earned the right to, when he felt it was time, it was time. I have a lot of respect for him and what he built and what he sustained there."

The path to a Big 12 title at Oklahoma State, Mike Gundy says, does not involve focusing on changes at Oklahoma and Texas.

West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen on Bob Stoops' decision to retire: "Admirable." Holgorsen said he was startled by the news, but he understood it completely upon reviewing the situation.

We've now seen the new coaches on both sides of the Red River Rivalry at Big 12 media days. Herman wins the intensity battle, but Riley comes across as the more approachable guy and unflappable at the same time. Their contrasting demeanors will make for a nice subplot on Oct. 14 and in future games -- and will factor in their ability to sustain success at the league's flagship programs.

Offseason workouts at Oklahoma this year have ticked up in intensity as a result of the Sooners' 1-2 start a year ago, according to QB Baker Mayfield. Mayfield says the Sooners understand better now that this time "prepares you for those first three games," which this year include a Sept. 9 visit to Ohio State.

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield does not agree with the suggestion that he's got more eyes -- and pressure -- on him as a senior without a star-studded backfield.

OU coach Lincoln Riley on the addition of Ruffin McNeill to the Sooners' defensive staff: "We have a ton of history, a lot of trust built up." Riley said McNeill has developed Alan excellent relationship with defensive coordinator Mike Stoops.

If I'd never watched Lincoln Riley address an audience before today, what would stand out to me is simply how calm he appears in this setting. Not that it's necessarily an indication of his ability to replace Bob Stoops, but Riley is notably composed for someone so young who's never done this. On his players, Riley said: "I don't feel like they should have to accept me just because I'm the head coach. I feel like that's something I should have to earn."

Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury and Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield have a moment. They visited briefly, shook hands, smiled here at Big 12 media days. They have plenty of history, with Mayfield having played for Kingsbury before transferring to Oklahoma.
