Schwarber not surprised Cubs demoted him

Kyle Schwarber made his first public comments Monday since the Cubs sent him down to Triple-A, saying he wasn't surprise by the demotion but "that's obviously something that you don't want to have, and it ticks you off a little bit."

Cubs' Contreras hits HR in leadoff role debut

Willson Contreras -- the eighth leadoff hitter for the Cubs this season -- hit a home run Monday in his first at-bat in the No. 1 spot. Contreras' teammate Anthony Rizzo also hit a homer in his first leadoff at-bat last week.

Like Anthony Rizzo before him Willson Contreras hit a lead off home run in his very first at-bat leading off a game in his career. He took Gio Gonzalez deep on a 3-1 pitch to start the game making him the 3rd different Cub to hit a lead off HR this season.

At some point, the expectation that the Cubs will break out and go on a tear demands evaluation. A 13-10 June has them back over .500, but is that it?

Can the Cubs give Bryce Harper the Bryce Harper treatment again?

A season ago, Joe Maddon's team frustrated the Nationals star by issuing free passes for an entire series. But now Washington has an MVP candidate protecting Harper in the lineup. We debate Chicago's strategy as the Cubs and Nats meet again.

Watch Addison Russell discuss his shoulder ailment which caused him to leave Sunday's game against the Marlins. He's doubtful for Monday in Washington.

The Cubs lost 4-2 to the Marlins splitting the 4 game series after another frustrating day at the plate. They left 11 men on base after earning 8 hits and 7 walks. Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant combined to leave 7 on as Rizzo came up twice with the bases loaded and only managed a sac fly. Mike Montgomery didn't give up any earned runs but wasn't able to pitch around an Addison Russell error, allowing three runs to score in the first inning. Two sac flys wasn't enough offense as the Marlins take the season finale.

The Cubs gave up three first inning runs on Sunday increasing their season total to 64 in the opening inning, second only to the Mets. All three were unearned so they actually lowered their first inning ERA, though that means nothing on the scoreboard.
