Granderson smacks first HR as Dodger in loss

Curtis Granderson took former teammate Justin Verlander deep for his first home run as a member of the Dodgers, but the Tigers won 5-1 on Sunday.

Apparently, when Justin Verlander is on, not even the Los Angeles Dodgers can beat him. Verlander held the rolling Dodgers to two hits over eight innings, one of which was a solo homer from Curtis Granderson. The Tigers beat LA 6-1, snapping the Dodgers' six-game winning streak.

Looks like the Tigers' Justin Verlander is done after eight dominant innings against the Dodgers. Los Angeles managed just two hits off of Verlander, including Curtis Granderson's solo homer in the sixth. Verlander struck out nine. Detroit leads 4-1 as we head to the bottom of the eighth.

Umps end protest of 'abusive player behavior'

Umpires on Sunday decided to remove the white wristbands they wore to protest what they called "abusive player behavior," they and will meet with MLB commissioner Rob Manfred.

The dual no-hitter thing is done, but we're left with a pretty good contest brewing between the Tigers and Dodgers. Curtis Granderson got LA on the board, homering off of his old pal Justin Verlander by hitting the right-field foul pole in the top of the sixth. Verlander just missed with a two-strike fastball on the previous pitch. It's 1-0 LA but the Tigers are threatening against Kenta Maeda in the bottom of the sixth.

Bradford Doolittle ESPN Staff Writer

Things are getting interesting in Detroit, where we've got not one but two no-hitters going. Detroit's Justin Verlander has allowed only Yasiel Puig's walk in the fifth, while the Dodgers' Kenta Maeda is perfect through five. Verlander has thrown 64 pitches; Maeda is at 57.

Bradford Doolittle ESPN Staff Writer

The Dodgers entered today with 87 wins already on the board. The most wins the Giants could possibly finish with is 87. In other words, the Giants will be eliminated from the NL West race with one more loss or one more LA win. It's Aug. 20! According to Elias, the last time a team was eliminated from its division race this early was 1998. The Giants have never been eliminated from NL West contention this early, dating back to 1969.

Bradford Doolittle ESPN Staff Writer

We've zipped through three innings already in Detroit. Eighteen up and eighteen down so far, thanks to three perfect frames apiece from Tigers starter Justin Verlander and Dodgers starter Kenta Maeda.

Another Dodgers injury note: Clayton Kershaw will throw a three-inning simulated game on Monday. If Kershaw's outing goes well, what's next? "Once he passes that marker right there, we'll see where he goes. It's probably going to be a start either with the (Double-A) Tulsa club or (Triple-A Oklahoma City) club." Kershaw has been on the DL since July 24 because of a lower back strain. The Dodgers have gone 18-3 since that time, so clearly the need for his return is desperate.

No surprises regarding the condition of the Dodgers' Cody Bellinger, who sprained his right ankle during Saturday's game. While it appeared that there was some slight swelling around the injury, manager Dave Roberts said, "He came out of it as good as expected. It was a mild strain and he'll be available to hit (today). We'll try to stay away from it but if an obvious spot comes up, we'll use him."

Bellinger suffers injury in Dodgers' win (1:08)

The only thing that changes for the Dodgers from day to day is how they win, not whether they win. On Saturday, it was a 3-0 whitewashing of the Tigers. Hyun-Jin Ryu threw five scoreless innings and three relievers tacked on four more. In his first game for LA, Curtis Granderson went 0 for 4 but reached on an error and scored the game's first run. The Dodgers have won six straight, 21 of 24 and 52 of 61. Now at 53 games over .500, it's getting kind of ridiculous.

Bellinger leaves game after catch at warning track (0:30)

The Dodgers announced that Cody Bellinger has a mild right ankle sprain and is listed as day to day. Bellinger turned the ankle running down a fly ball on the warning track in right field in the sixth but was able to finish the inning. Yasiel Puig pinch hit for him in the seventh.

Bradford Doolittle ESPN Staff Writer

Yasiel Puig is on deck to bat for Cody Bellinger in the seventh, so maybe the ankle the Dodgers' star rookie turned hasn't loosened up. Will update when we get more info. It's still scoreless. Detroit's Michael Fulmer has limited LA to two hits through 6 1/3 innings.

Bradford Doolittle ESPN Staff Writer

We're through six scoreless innings in Detroit between the Dodgers and Tigers. Scary moment for LA in the bottom of the sixth when Cody Bellinger turned his right ankle while running down Nick Castellanos' fly ball to the right field warning track. He limped around for a minute under the watch of manager Dave Roberts and the trainer but remained in the game.

Kinsler, Ausmus not moved by umps' MLB gripe

Some umpires across the majors are wearing white wristbands Saturday, a show of solidarity after Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler was fined -- and not suspended -- for harsh criticism of Angel Hernandez earlier this week.

Bradford Doolittle ESPN Staff Writer

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced that starter Yu Darvish will miss his next scheduled start in Pittsburgh because of residual problems with a sore back. Darvish is expected to miss only one outing.
