Jose Altuve's impressive trifecta

The Astros star won the batting title and World Series in October and was named AL MVP on Thursday. Just seven other players have pieced together a batting crown/world championship/MVP trifecta: Joe DiMaggio (1939), Stan Musial (1946), Willie Mays (1954), Mickey Mantle (1956), Dick Groat (1960), Frank Robinson (1966) and Buster Posey (2012). (Elias Sports Bureau)

ESPN Stats and Information

What made José Altuve great? He hit .354/.422/.513 in PA ending with low pitches in 2017. He had only had a .300+ BA vs low pitches once previously (.328 in 2014). He topped previous-best slugging percentage vs low pitches by 67 points (.446 in 2016)

ESPN Stats and Information

José Altuve is the second Astros player to win MVP, joining Jeff Bagwell in 1994. Bagwell was inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer. Altuve is the fifth player whose primary position was 2B to win the AL MVP award since the BBWAA first awarded it in 1931, and the first since Dustin Pedroia in 2008. The others are Charlie Gehringer (1937), Joe Gordon (1942), and Nellie Fox (1959).

ESPN Stats and Information

At 5-6, José Altuve shares the distinction as the shortest player to win a MVP award with Phil Rizzuto (1950) and Bobby Shantz (1952). At 6-6, Giancarlo Stanton becomes the tallest player in baseball history to win a MVP award.

The not-so-tall tales of Jose Altuve

As Altuve began the final act of his MVP season, everyone in the Astros organization had a story of the first time the All-Star second baseman wowed them.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

In a bit of a surprise, Jose Altuve was the landslide winner over Aaron Judge in the AL MVP voting, collecting 27 of 30 first-place votes. He becomes the second MVP in Astros history, joining Jeff Bagwell, and he did it on the strength of his all-around brilliance and season-long consistency. He won his third batting title, reached 200 hits for the fourth season in a row, stole 32 bases and played solid defense at a premium position. Not bad for a guy who was told to go home after the first day of a tryout camp when he was 16 years old. He came back the next day anyway. Now he's the MVP.

Expert picks: Manager of the Year

A.J. Hinch and Dave Roberts both won more than 100 games and led their teams to the World Series. But does that mean they were the top managers in the AL and NL this season?

Marly Rivera ESPN Writer
