Ranking all 30 clubs by triumphs and fails: Angels

The best and the brightest

The nine 2017 Gold Glove winners from the American League were announced on Tuesday night. The Twins, Angels and Royals each have two players receiving the honor this year.

ESPN Stats and Information

Angels C Martín Maldonado wins his first career Gold Glove Award. Maldonado is the first Angels C to win the Gold Glove Award since Bengie Molina in 2003. Maldonado rates as one of the best catchers in MLB at pitch-framing, particularly getting strikes on pitches off the outside corner.

ESPN Stats and Information

Angels SS Andrelton Simmons wins his third career Gold Glove. He's the first Angels SS to win since Erick Aybar in 2011. Simmons posted the second-highest Defensive Runs Saved total of his career (32), but in a different fashion than usual. He was better turning balls hit up the middle into outs than he usually is. His usual success comes at fielding the ball in the 5-6 hole.

ESPN Stats and Information

This is the 1st full season of Mike Trout's career that he will not finish top-2 in MVP votes; he isn't in the finalists so he isn't top 3. His streak of 5 straight top-2 finishes is tied with 2000-04 Barry Bonds for the longest such streak.

Guerra posted a 4.68 ERA over 19 games in 2016.

Which Angels should win Gold Gloves?

Martin Maldonado has the best defensive resume among catchers, but that might not be enough, while Andrelton Simmons is in a league of his own defensively among shortstops.
