Real or not? MLB's filthiest pitch of the year

The honor could belong to Jose Berrios, who unleashed a nasty curveball for a called strike against the Orioles' Mark Trumbo on Wednesday.

Ervin Santana has a 1.80 ERA in 10 starts this season. Since the franchise moved to Minnesota in 1961, only two Twins pitchers had an ERA that low through their first 10 starts of a season: Francisco Liriano (1.36 in 2006) and Scott Erickson (1.63 in 1991), according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Twins 1B Joe Mauer and C Jason Castro are both out of the starting lineup Wednesday vs. the Orioles. Kennys Vargas gets the nod at first, and Chris Gimenez will catch.

ESPN Stats and Information

Don't look now, but Ervin Santana is off to one of the hottest starts we've ever seen. It's been more than 60 years since a pitcher shut down batters with such regularity through his first 10 starts of a season.

The Twins' Brian Dozier began play outside the top-10 second basemen on the Player Rater and contributed his sixth home run in the win at Baltimore, and first in 11 games. But how can anyone ever worry about Dozier after last year, when he smacked 37 home runs from June 1 on? That's not evidence he'll do so again, but I'm sure more likely to trade for him than to deal him away. Any homer can be the start of something big.

Ervin Santana throws a two-hit shutout at Camden Yards to lower his ERA to 1.80, the first pitcher with a complete-game shutout of the Orioles at Camden since Carl Pavano in 2010. Santana has now allowed two or fewer hits in five of his 10 starts and batters are hitting .134 against him.

ESPN Stats and Information

Twins starter Ervin Santana is the only pitcher in MLB with multiple shutouts this season.

ESPN Stats and Information

Miguel Sano hit his 11th home run of the season and had three RBIs on Monday vs. the Orioles, bringing his season total to 37 RBIs in 40 games. The only other players in Twins/Senators history to have as many homers and RBIs as Sano in the first 40 games of a season were Larry Hisle in 1977 (11 HR, 42 RBIs) and Joe Mauer in 2009 (13 HR, 40 RBIs), per the Elias Sports Bureau. Braves 2B Brandon Phillips paced Monday's longest home runs, four out of five of which came from National League players.

Power Rankings: Twins on the rise

Two rainouts last week didn't prevent Jose Berrios from shining against the Rockies on Thursday. His dazzling performance is among the reasons the Twins have entered the top half of the rankings.

Revisiting preseason questions: Twins

In mid-February, we wondered if Byron Buxton could build on his hot finish to 2016, but the results so far this season have been ugly, as he's striking out 34 percent of the time.

Joey Gallo just barely edged out Jose Abreu for the longest bomb in MLB on Friday. Kennys Vargas' game-tying shot in the ninth inning against the Royals was next, with a pair of D-backs rounding out the list.
