Tanaka rebounds, but A's rally against Yanks bullpen, 4-1

Masahiro Tanaka struck out a career-high 13 but wound up a tough-luck loser when reliever Tyler Clippard's wild pickoff throw sparked a go-ahead, two-run eighth inning in the Oakland Athletics' 4-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday night.

Just like that, Masahiro Tanaka looks like he's fixed whatever was ailing him. Tonight, he threw 38 two-strike pitches, 20 of them splitters outside of the strike zone, and he got 12 swings resulting in five of his 13 total strikeouts on them. Every single one of those numbers represented a season high for him. It's like a totally different version of Tanaka showed up tonight, so hey, get him back in there and hope it lasts.

The mystery of Masahiro Tanaka

The ace of the Yankees has been plain awful so far this season. His team says it's just a rut. He insists he's healthy. So what exactly is wrong?

Andrew Marchand ESPN Senior Writer

The Yankees and Royals game has been postponed due to the rain. Masahiro Tanaka will now start Friday night against the A's. The Yankees and Royals will makeup the game on Sept. 25.

Duffy beats Yanks for 2nd time in week as Royals win 6-2

Danny Duffy beat the Yankees for the second time in a week and rookie Jorge Bonifacio capped a three-run, seventh-inning rally with a go-ahead, two-run homer that led the Kansas City Royals over New York 6-2 on Tuesday night.

Andrew Marchand ESPN Senior Writer

The Yankees lost to the Royals, 6-2. Kansas City couldn't solve Yankees rookie starter Jordan Montgomery, as they scored their only run on a Lorenzo Cain solo shot in Montgomery's 6 2/3 innings. But then against Yankee relievers Adam Warren, Jonathan Holder and Chasen Shreve, Kansas City was even more homer happy. Each of the Yankee relievers gave up a homers, as Jorge Bonifacio, Whit Merrifield and Mike Moustakas all went deep.

Andrew Marchand ESPN Senior Writer

Jorge Bonifacio just hit an opposite two-run field homer off Adam Warren to make it 3-2 Royals in the 7th.

Andrew Marchand ESPN Senior Writer

Rookie Jordan Montgomery leaves to a nice hand after his best outing of his young career. Montgomery allowed just one run on two hits, striking out six and walking none in 6 2/3 innings. The Yankees are beating the Royals, 2-1 in the 7th. Aaron Judge is 0-for-2 with a walk.

ESPN Stats and Information

Yankees outfielder Aaron Hicks has 8 HR in 33 games. He had 8 in 123 games last season.
