Defensive lineman Art Jones only played 17 games for Colts after receiving $16 million in guaranteed money. Jones, who was released Friday after three injury-filled years, is another reminder that the Ravens generally make the right call with their own free agents. Ravens took criticism for initially not retaining Jones, a starter on their Super Bowl team.

NFL competition committee is proposing a rule change that would invalidate the strategy used by the Ravens last season to close out a game against the Bengals. The rule would prohibit a team from committing multiple fouls in an attempt to manipulate the game clock. The Ravens had nine players commit holding to protect punter Sam Koch while he ran out the clock. If approved, the rule would make this a 15-yard penalty and reset the clock.

Dennis Pitta took a $2.5 million pay cut for the next two seasons to remain with the Ravens. Pitta, who led all tight ends last season with 86 receptions, will make $2.5 million in base salary in 2017 along with a $500,000 roster bonus. He was previously scheduled to earn $5.5 million. This gives Baltimore an additional $2.5 million in cap space in 2017 and 2018.

Madden mirror: Unis sold Jefferson on Ravens

Safety Tony Jefferson said Madden -- and how he looked in the Baltimore uniforms in the video game -- was a factor in his ultimately signing with the Ravens in free agency.

Interesting uniform number for Ravens safety Tony Jefferson. He will wear No. 21, which had long been used by Lardarius Webb. So, Jefferson gets the number of the player he replaced. Webb was cut one day after Baltimore signed Jefferson.

Ravens have a pre-draft visit set up with Washington WR John Ross, according to the NFL Network. Baltimore will likely be taking a look at Ross' right shoulder, which was surgically repaired last week. Ross, who is considered one of the top three receivers in the draft, went to the Ravens in Todd McShay's latest mock draft. After Baltimore lost Steve Smith and Kamar Aiken in free agency, wide receiver has become an increasing need.

New Ravens CB Brandon Carr said last season's emotional playoff loss when he was with the Cowboys caused him to contemplate retiring for a moment. "It probably lasted 17 seconds to get it out of your system," Carr said at his introductory press conference. "I feel like I have a lot of football to play."

Ravens coach John Harbaugh on signing of Brandon Carr: "Brandon is one of the most dependable, solid corners in football." Carr has never missed a game since entering NFL in 2008.
