Sports Science puts Mahomes through his paces

Former Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes II visited the Sports Science lab to show off the big arm and athleticism that made him into the eventual No. 10 overall pick.

"We have to be patient. He's not ready right now." -- Chiefs coach Andy Reid on quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

ESPN Stats and Information

Patrick Mahomes II is a bit of a departure from what the Chiefs are used to under center with Alex Smith. The Texas Tech product led the Power 5 conferences in completions outside the pocket (55) and ranked second in the Big 12 for scramble yards (313).

Kansas City is a great, great place for Patrick Mahomes to go. Steady, strong HC in Reid who has vast experience developing QBs and learned from a great one in Mike Holmgren. Steady, strong starter in Alex Smith who is totally unlike Mahomes from a playing mentality standpoint and would seem to be a great resource for a sometimes erratic young QB.

Matt Bowen ESPN Staff Writer

Really good fit for Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City. Structured system under Andy Reid that will develop his footwork, timing and overall mechanics. Plus, with the west coast route tree, Mahomes can showcase his arm strength throwing the ball inside of the numbers. Find the window and expose the coverage.

QB Patrick Mahomes is loaded with talent. If you focus on his mechanics and his backyard style of play, you're not going to like him. If you focus on the results and his potential, you see star qualities. Kansas City is a great home for Mahomes. He can learn from Andy Reid and won't be rushed onto the field.

As for the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes, a QB needing time to develop could do much worse than to spend that time with Andy Reid.

Adam Teicher ESPN Staff Writer

The Chiefs drafted a quarterback in the first round for the first time since 1983 in Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes.I had Chiefs taking Mahomes in ESPN NFL Nation mock draft, but at 27.

Dan Graziano ESPN Staff Writer

Now 7 offensive players in the top 10. Bills move down 17 spots, add a third-rounder this year and a first-rounder next year. Can absolutely get CB help at 27. Great deal for Buffalo.

Todd McShay ESPN Senior Writer

The Chiefs traded up to No. 10 overall. Is it for a QB? I think Deshaun Watson is a better fit for their scheme than Patrick Mahomes, but I heard Mahomes and Davis Webb as two QBs linked to KC leading up to the draft.

Mike Sando ESPN Senior Writer

Word is, Andy Reid likes Patrick Mahomes. Does he like Mahomes enough to take him at No. 10?

Mike Rodak ESPN Staff Writer

In trading down from No. 10 to No. 27, the Bills also acquired a 2017 third round pick (91st overall) and 2018 first round pick from Kansas City. That's an ideal outcome for Buffalo, which is now building draft capital under new coach Sean McDermott. Obvious change in philosophy from 2014, when Bills gave up a 2015 first-round pick to move up five spots for WR Sammy Watkins.

Adam Teicher ESPN Staff Writer

Chiefs move up from 27 to 10 in trade with Bills. Options includes QBs Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson and several defense of players, including one back Reuben Foster of Alabama.

Mike Rodak ESPN Staff Writer

Bills have traded down with Kansas City, hopping out of the No. 10 spot. Buffalo entered Draft with seven picks and wanted more. This could help them get more young talent. Deep draft makes it deal to have extra picks.

ESPN Staff

Which player will the Chiefs take at No. 27? Here are the final projected picks from Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay, plus the players Louis Riddick and NFL Nation would select: Kiper – Evan Engram, WR/TE, Ole Miss; McShay – Jarrad Davis, ILB, Florida; Riddick – Reuben Foster, ILB, Alabama; NFL Nation – Patrick Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech.

ESPN Stats and Information

Opposing running back gashed the Chiefs up the middle last season. Kansas City could target a run-stuffing D-lineman early in the draft to disrupt the interior of opponents' O-lines.
