Today's Chiefs training camp report: The Chiefs held their last practice of the summer at Missouri Western State University. The practice was conducted without pads and a result was not one of their competitive workouts. The Chiefs had to move to the indoor practice facility because of heavy rain after about 50 minutes. They practiced without, among others, linebacker Tamba Hali (knee), safety Eric Berry (heel) and guard Parker Ehinger (knee). The Chiefs continue their preseason on Saturday against the Bengals in Cincinnati and resume practice next week in Kansas City.

Overheard Tuesday at Chiefs camp: "He's had a very good training camp. Obviously he showed well in the game last week. He's made the competition for the backup quarterback position one of the focal points of training camp and it's going to be fun to see him continue to develop." -- Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt on the progress of rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes II

Tuesday's rookie report from Chiefs camp: Patrick Mahomes II will take every chance he can reasonably get to show off his big arm. He got his opportunity during a 7-on-7 drill when he threw a ball perhaps 50 yards down the field. Waiting on the other end was wide receiver Tyreek Hill to make catch.

Tuesday's best play from Chiefs camp: Wide receiver Chris Conley wrestled the ball away from cornerback Marcus Peters on a play where each had his hands on the ball. Alex Smith through the pass.

Tuesday's injury update from Chiefs camp: The Chiefs continued to work without three of their top defensive backs. safety Eric Berry (heel), cornerback Steven Nelson (groin) and cornerback Terrance Mitchell (hamstring) again missed practice. None of the three has practiced since Friday night's preseason game. Nelson and Mitchell played in the game, Berry did not. Linebacker Tamba Hali (knee) and guard Parker Ehinger (knee) were among the others who did not practice.

Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said the recent promotion of Patrick Mahomes II to No. 2 on the depth chart isn't necessarily a sign that the rookie quarterback's development is ahead of what the Chiefs expected it would be. "The thought process on the season is that he's going to have a chance to learn," Hunt said today while paying a visit to training camp. "Whether he was going to be playing second string or third string, there really wasn't a plan. I think Andy (Reid) is making those decisions as we go."

Patrick Mahomes II failed to get a touchdown on his turn at the two-minute drill at Chiefs camp. He hit his first three passes but then threw four straight incompletions.

The starting offense just went the length of the field for a touchdown against the starting defense in a two-minute drill. An Alex Smith to Albert Wilson pass was the big play. The touchdown came on a pass to Chris Conley

Overheard Monday at Chiefs camp: "He shows up to work and he's very humble. He's very attentive. He does a great job taking notes and then he comes out to practice and he works his tail off. He does a great job of showing young guys how to be a professional… The other thing I would say is he can still run pretty fast." -- running backs coach Eric Bieniemy on veteran C.J. Spiller, who is trying to resurrect his career with the Chiefs.

Monday's rookie report from chiefs camp: Tanoh Kpassagnon at 289 pounds was drafted in the second round as a defensive end, but he's playing a lot at outside linebacker in training camp. He did a great job in pass coverage for such a large player, staying on separate plays with running backs Charcandrick West, Orson Charles and C.J. Spiller all the way down the field. "He's a very good athlete," defensive coordinator Bob Sutton said. "He showing he's pretty comfortable (in pass coverage). The more he works at it the better off he is going to be. We'll see where it takes him."

Monday's best play from Chiefs camp: the offense lined up in a triple-stack formation, with three receivers in a vertical line at the snap. This prompted some confusion among the defensive backs about which receiver they were each responsible for. None of them covered tight and Demetrius Harris, who was left alone to catch a touchdown pass from Alex Smith.

Monday's injury report from Chiefs camp: Derrick Johnson didn't practice but it was a regularly scheduled day off for the veteran linebacker, who tore his Achilles tendon late last season. Johnson had a similar rest day earlier in camp. Linebacker Tamba Hali (knee), safety Eric Berry (heel), cornerbacks Steven Nelson (groin) and Terrance Mitchell (hamstring) and guard Parker Ehinger (knee) were among the others who did not practice.
