Roster rankings: Raiders flying high

Oakland has some holes on defense and at right tackle, but there's talent up and down the rest of the lineup.

Paul Gutierrez ESPN Staff Writer

Khalil Mack, the reigning NFL defensive player of the year, checked in at No. 5 in the NFL Network's Top 100 rankings, in voting by players. Mack was one of four Raiders players on the list, along with All Pro left guard Kelechi Osemele, who was No. 95, Pro Bowl receiver Amari Cooper, who was No. 53, and Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Carr, who was No. 11.

Top of the QB market: Derek Carr

While Carr's deal didn't reset the quarterback market, he's certainly residing in some very expensive real estate.

ESPN Stats and Information

76 days to the NFL season: Sebastian Janikowski attempted a 76-yard field goal on Sept. 28, 2008 vs Chargers, longest field goal attempt in NFL history. It was no good.

Derek Carr's deal doesn't shock the QB market

The Raiders quarterback now is the league's "highest-paid player" on a deal that is perfect for him, but the $125 million extension fails to shake up the marketplace for other signal-callers.

Derek Carr rarely crashes

During an era in which quarterbacks are protecting the ball better than ever, only Aaron Rodgers has done so more effectively in NFL history than Derek Carr, who is on par with Tom Brady in that capacity.

Some Derek Carr contract details: $40m fully guaranteed at signing. $70.2m total guaranteed at signing for injury. (So 40 full, 30.2 for injury only) He will make $25m in year one - a $12.5m signing bonus, a $7.5m roster bonus paid on June 30 and a $5m base salary. In 2018, he has a $15m roster bonus fully guaranteed at signing. His $7.4m 2018 base salary becomes fully guaranteed in February 2018. He also has a $100,000 workout bonus in 2018 and each subsequent year of the deal. He has $20m in 2019 money guaranteed for injury at signing and it becomes fully guaranteed in Feb 2019. The remaining injury guarantee (about $3m) is part of his 2020 salary, which is around $20m, as are his non-guaranteed 2021 and 2022 salaries.

Why Derek Carr got the big bucks

Since Carr entered the league, only Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Russell Wilson have been better at producing touchdowns and avoiding interceptions. Each has been paid handsomely in that time frame, while Carr was still on his rookie contract.
