During an interview with "Brock and Salk" on 710 ESPN Seattle, Sherman Smith made it clear that he was fired as the Seahawks running backs coach. It wasn't his decision to leave. "We went into the meeting, Pete [Carroll] just started talking about, he thought it was time about making a change," Smith said. "And it surprised me because I thought I would be the one more or less leading the conversation -- either saying I hadn't decided to retire yet or I'm going to coach another year. But I didn't think it would be him saying, ‘I want to make a change.' …I may not like it, but that's his decision, and I'm fine with it."

Blair Walsh's contract with the Seahawks is one year, $1.1 million with no money guaranteed. It carries a base salary of $800,000, and an additional $300,000 is available in bonuses, depending on whether he makes the team and stays on the 53-man roster. Walsh will almost certainly be competing for the kicking job next summer.

Continuity Rankings: Seahawks among least changed

The Seahawks have lost two defensive coordinators to head coaching jobs elsewhere over the last five seasons. Otherwise, not much has changed in the Emerald City since 2012.

A league source has confirmed that the Seahawks have received only a warning for failing to disclose Richard Sherman's knee injury on the injury report in the second half of last season. ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported previously that the league was considering docking the Seahawks a second-round pick. Sherman did not miss a game in 2016, but Pete Carroll said after the season that he had been dealing with a "significant" knee injury.

Seahawks DE Cliff Avril announced on Instagram that he underwent surgery Tuesday with Dr. William C. Meyers in Philadelphia. Meyers has treated other Seahawks for core injuries like sports hernias. Avril started every game for the Seahawks last season, had 11.5 sacks and made his first Pro Bowl.
